The exam will ask questions like: "Based on this METAR, what is the current ceiling?" or "What are the wind conditions at this airport?" Practice decoding METARs until it becomes automatic.
A TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) predicts weather conditions over a 24 or 30-hour period. TAFs use change groups like FM (from), TEMPO (temporary conditions), and BECMG (becoming). The key difference from METARs: TAFs are forecasts, not current observations. Cloud heights in TAFs are AGL, same as METARs.
Density altitude is the altitude at which the air density equals a standard atmosphere — it's the single most important performance concept for the exam. High density altitude means thin air, which reduces drone performance (less lift, less thrust, shorter battery life).
Three factors increase density altitude: high temperature, high humidity, and high elevation. If you're flying in Phoenix in July at 1,100 feet MSL with temperatures above 110°F, the density altitude could be over 5,000 feet — your drone will perform as if it's flying at that elevation.
The exam may give you a density altitude chart and ask you to calculate the density altitude given specific conditions. Practice these calculations until you can do them quickly.
Know these hazards: Microbursts — intense, localized downdrafts from thunderstorms that create sudden windshear. Wind shear — sudden changes in wind speed or direction. Thunderstorms — always avoid; the FAA considers any thunderstorm hazardous to all aircraft. Temperature inversions — trap moisture and pollutants near the surface, reducing visibility.
This section tests your understanding of how weight, balance, and environmental conditions affect drone performance. While it's the lowest-weighted section, the questions are straightforward if you understand the core concepts.
The total weight of your sUAS — including the airframe, battery, camera, and any payload — must not exceed 55 pounds. But weight affects more than just legality: heavier drones consume more battery power, have shorter flight times, and require more aggressive maneuvering to maintain stable flight.
Center of gravity (CG) must remain within the manufacturer's specified limits. An out-of-balance drone becomes harder to control and may become unstable. If you add an aftermarket payload, verify that the CG hasn't shifted outside safe limits.

The exam may ask: "On a hot, humid day at a high-elevation airport, what effect would this have on drone performance?" The answer is always: reduced performance. Higher density altitude = less lift, less thrust, shorter flight times.
This is the largest section of the exam. It covers crew resource management, emergency procedures, aeronautical decision-making, physiological factors, and airport operations.
The remote PIC is responsible for the safe conduct of the flight — period. Even if you delegate tasks to a visual observer or person manipulating the controls, you are responsible. Effective CRM means: clear communication with your crew before and during the flight, defined roles and responsibilities, and an established procedure for emergencies.
The FAA uses the IMSAFE checklist for personal readiness: Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol (no flying within 8 hours of consuming alcohol or with a BAC of 0.04% or higher), Fatigue, Emotion. The PAVE checklist covers flight risk: Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, External pressures.
Hazardous attitudes the FAA tests on: Anti-authority ("Rules don't apply to me"), Impulsivity ("Do it quickly"), Invulnerability ("It won't happen to me"), Macho ("I can handle it"), Resignation ("What's the point?"). Know these and their antidotes.
In an emergency, the remote PIC may deviate from any Part 107 rule to the extent necessary to meet the emergency. However, you may be asked to submit a written report to the FAA if requested. The most important principle: always prioritize the safety of people on the ground and other aircraft. If you lose visual contact or experience a flyaway, your immediate priority is avoiding populated areas and manned aircraft.
The exam covers: Hypoxia — not typically relevant at drone altitudes, but tested because it's in the knowledge standard. Hyperventilation — caused by stress or anxiety, treated by slowing breathing rate. Visual illusions — particularly relevant for drone pilots who may misjudge distance or altitude. Drugs and alcohol — 8-hour "bottle to throttle" rule, 0.04% BAC limit.
Even if you never fly near an airport, you need to understand: traffic patterns (standard left-hand turns), runway markings (threshold, displaced threshold, blast pad), airport signage (red = mandatory, yellow = guidance), and right-of-way rules (always yield to manned aircraft, including aircraft on approach or departure).

MSL (Mean Sea Level) is the altitude above sea level — what your altimeter reads. AGL (Above Ground Level) is your height above the terrain directly below you. Part 107's 400-foot altitude limit is measured in AGL. Obstruction heights on sectional charts show both: the top number is MSL, the bottom number (in parentheses) is AGL. Always use AGL for Part 107 altitude compliance.

Part 107 operations are allowed during civil twilight and at night, provided the drone has anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles.
